Support DPS¶
Support DPS creates the kill window.
Damage without pierce, heal cut, armor reduction, disruption, or utility often becomes fake pressure. Support DPS is the bridge between pure damage and pure support.
Core job¶
Support DPS makes allied damage matter.
Possible contributions include:
- pierce
- heal cut / anti-heal
- armor reduction
- purge
- slows or holds
- disruption
- pressure that keeps targets inside damage
- enough damage or threat to justify the slot
Support DPS is neither normal DPS nor pure support. It must bring utility that helps the zerg convert kills while still adding enough pressure to matter.
Timing principle¶
Utility late is often worthless.
If main damage lands before pierce or heal cut, the enemy may survive with defensives, Locus, Guard, Demon, Rootbound, or healing already active.
Sometimes a smaller on-time button is better than a big late E.
What you watch¶
- actual damage target
- whether the clump is real
- whether allied DPS can hit the same spot
- enemy defensive stack
- whether your E will be late
- whether W/smaller utility can still land on time
- whether your utility is enabling kills or chasing meters
Pierce and heal-cut responsibility¶
Pierce and heal cut should be judged by whether they affect the kill window, not whether they appear somewhere on the screen.
Good support DPS asks:
- Did I hit the same target as damage?
- Did my utility land before or with damage?
- Did I hit enough people to matter?
- Was this a kill window, or just a random cast?
- If I missed E, did I still land useful smaller pressure?
Common failures¶
| Failure | Why it hurts |
|---|---|
| Chasing damage numbers | You stop enabling actual kills. |
| Piercing the wrong clump | Main damage hits unassisted targets. |
| Landing utility after damage | Enemy heals/defensives already solved the window. |
| Using E randomly before engage | The next real window has no utility. |
| Ignoring heal-cut needs | Sustained pressure fails to convert. |
| Hitting isolated protected tanks | You create fake value while real targets reset. |
Positioning¶
Support DPS must often play closer to the kill window than normal ranged DPS, but not so close that it feeds. Your position should let you apply utility to the same target area allied DPS will hit.
If you are too far back, your utility lands late. If you are too deep, you die before the window.
VOD drill¶
For every engage, answer:
- Did support utility land before or with damage?
- Did it hit the actual target?
- Did it create a kill window?
- If E was late, was there a better on-time button?
- Did my utility pair with clump, pierce, heal cut, and DPS timing?
